The Problem
The Houston and Galveston area is a severe nonattainment
area for ground level ozone. Ozone is not the only pollutant in the air.
But it is the "smog" that is seen almost every day in the air.
Additional sources of air pollution in this region are carbon dioxide,
carbon monoxide and particulates.
Ozone occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
and nitrogen oxides (NOX) react to sunlight. Over the past 20 years, Houston
has made good progress in reducing VOC emissions. But it is not enough.
Houston must reach the ozone standard in their region by 2007. |
