The Atmosphere

The Composition of the Atmosphere

Earth's atmosphere is the mixture of gases, suspended solids, and liquids that surrounds the planet. Dry air is 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, and one percent other gases, which include carbon dioxide and argon. The amount of water vapor in air varies from zero to four percent. Dust, smoke, and waste gases from industry and transportation are impurities in the air not included among the permanent gases.
